SUZANNE LAURENDEAU - OTTO VON THOREN - RITA-ANNE PIQUET
SUZANNE LAURENDEAU (1924 - 2018)
Suzanne Laurendeau, born in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, in Québec, passed away in 2018.
She studied at l’École des Beaux-Arts de Québec, and in France she studied stained-glass artwork with the master, Olivier Ferland, at l’École de Chartres. This greatly influenced the well-defined contours in her compositions.
“When approaching a painting, Suzanne Laurendeau knows, from the onset, how she will represent her characters, the space they will occupy, the clothes and colours she will select from her palette. She works with both acrylic and oil paints as mediums.”
Suzanne Laurendeau won, to name but a few, the prestigious Palme d’argent at the Biennale of Paris, and, in Québec, an award in recognition of her life work.
Her paintings are in private, public and corporate collections including DuPont of Canada, Bombardier, GlaxoSmithKline, Merrill Lynch, Canadian Royal Mint, and the Museum of Fine-Arts in Montréal.

OTTO VON THOREN (1828 - 1889)
Otto von Thoren, also known as Karl Kasimir Otto von Thoren, was born in Vienna, Austria in 1828, the son of Colonel Franz Kasimir Ritter von Thoren and Konstanze Maria.
He became an officer in 1846 and spent some time in Venice, as an adjutant to the military and civil governor Ludwig Gorzkowski.
After turning to painting in 1857, he studied art in Brussels and Paris. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam in 1863, and became a member of the Academies of Amsterdam, Vienna and St Petersburg. He exhibited at salons in Brussels, Paris and Munich.
In the 1860s he was commissioned for an equestrian portrait of Emperor Franz Josef in Vienna. After painting Gustav Adolf´s death, a popular theme with historical painters, he turned to animal painting, especially horses and grazing cattle. He is also known for his landscapes with figures and framing in an oval gold setting. He received numerous awards, including the order of Vladimir and the order of Franz Josef.
From the early 1870s he lived in Paris where he died and was buried in 1889 in the Montmartre cemetery.

RITA-ANNE PIQUET (1953-2017)
Rita-Anne Piquet studied at the Academy of Realist Art, the Royal Ontario Museum, George Brown College and Three Schools of Art in Toronto, as well as the Ballynakil Studios in Ireland.
Considered a contemporary landscape artist whose medium was oil, the use of strong, clear colour was a hallmark of her painting. Piquet was extremely attentive to colour and detail, and this reflects in her paintings. Drawn to quiet, intimate spaces, both in the rural landscape and in cities, much of her work was inspired by her travels to Europe, the Caribbean and across Canada.
“The overriding theme of my painting over the years has always been a contemplative study of the world. In the landscape work, I choose to portray subjects which speak of stillness, serenity and frequently, solitude.”
Rita-Anne Piquet exhibited across Canada, in both solo and group shows. She participated in the Canadian Opera Company art exhibit, the National Ballet art exhibit, the Oakville Galleries Spring Collection exhibition, and the exhibit of the Women of the Toronto Heliconian Club.
Her paintings were selected for the cover of The New Anthology of Canadian Literature, Oxford University Press, the Canadian Treasurer, the Canadian Journal of Women's Health Care, The Feminine Viewpoint Works by Contemporary Women Artists, and by Amnesty International for their Christmas cards collections. She participated in the artist-in-residence program at the Masterworks Foundation in Bermuda where she created a body of work depicting Bermuda from the perspective of a Canadian artist.
Rita-Anne Piquet’s paintings are now only in private collections.

MARC POISSANT (1945 - )
Marc Poissant is a self-taught artist who was born in Montreal in 1945. During his university studies in humanities he discovered his passion for painting, an activity which had occupied much of his leisure time when he was young.
His initial approach to painting was essentially traditional, but he soon realized his limitations by trying to copy nature. He turned towards more modern trends. Painting is a free interplay of its basic elements, where composition, colour and light are at the very heart of his artwork.
His figurative landscapes are drawn from his imagination. Every stroke of the pallet determines the next one, and accidents are as much a part of the process as anything willed or contrived. A good painting is the result of many determinants, but the key is the artist's ability to reach his inner sensibilities which makes all his creations unique.
His paintings are in many Canadian and International private and public collections including the Bank of Hong Kong, Pratt & Whitney, and Banque Desjardins.

CRAIG YEATS (1951 - )
Craig Yeats studied at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Florida and received his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina.
An avid sailor and entering many races with the West Vancouver Yacht Club, one can understand his complete mastery of painting his seascapes.
Yeats painted in a realist and impressionist style for many years, but with time he became concerned that his work had become too detailed. The constraints of realism were limiting the visual impact of the paintings. He decided to simplify his technique by using a palette knife instead of brushes. At first, he painted over old paintings with layers of new paint, obliterating the detail and reducing the paintings to basic colour and design.
Striving for simplicity, but always aiming for that visual impact, his landscapes and still lifes are more abstract in nature, with a primary focus on texture, colour and design. Today, his paintings are mostly semi-abstractions of landscapes, seascapes, and still lifes.
Yeats is mainly represented in galleries in British Columbia. His works are very much in demand, and can be found in many private and corporate collections in Canada, Japan and internationally.

DAVID J. EDWARDS (1944 - )
David J. Edwards was born in Essex, England. He immigrated to Canada, residing first in Toronto, then moved to British Columbia.
Early influences included John Constable and J. M. W. Turner which may be seen in his large landscapes of rounded trees and powerful cloudscapes.
Later, the work of the French minimalist Nicolas De Stael played a very significant role in his development as a painter. He was profoundly moved by the manner in which De Stael used subtle changes in colour and textures to shape his paintings. Edwards' landscape paintings are abstracted to simple forms relying on texture and tonal variations to create drama.
His still-lifes and floral works are painted with a palette knife using acrylic on either canvas or board panels. He builds the shapes by layering subtle changes in tone and colour value, creating his very unique style of still-life. His landscapes are painted with both a brush and a palette knife.
David Edwards’ is a member of Landscape Artists International and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. His paintings hang in corporate and private collections across Canada, the United States, England, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Australia.

LILA LEWIS IRVING (1935 - )
Lila Lewis Irving who born in New York City, now living in Toronto, has embraced abstraction as a pure and personal art form. She has built a career dedicated to the rigours and rhythms of painting. Her spirited and enigmatic work is in many collections nationally and internationally.
Artist’s Statement:
“My painting is an energetic and intense process which results in work, deeply felt. The impetus is a response to a visual, an emotional or a musical world, or all three. The shapes are bold and simplified.
Non objective works centre on surface images of reinterpreted inner experiences. In my work I seek the resonance of music in reaching for the primordial soul. A universal rhythm is expressed through texture and sometimes through reflective metallic paint surfaces manipulated with implements beyond the brushstroke.
Beneath the surface lies an inspiration from myth and music. The canvas is placed on the floor. The paint is poured or thrown, sometimes manipulated, sometimes not. The hard part is knowing when to stop.
Although many of my paintings are non objective, I have always been interested in the figurative. Many years were spent drawing and painting from the model. Now I am abandoning the model in order to be more expressive, emphasizing feeling, intuition and relationships. Convincing but not accurate.
What is exciting now is that I am combining my love of the figurative with my knowledge and passion for the non objective. These works are large and heavily textured with thick paint and gels. They are sculptural works on canvas, bold, dramatic and emotional.
